During the 1960s a great precedent was laid on the first moon landings. What were the implications of such a development? At last humankind was in the position to chart outer space and visit foreign worlds. What were the ramifications of such an extraordinary technology, a technology so powerful it could finally allow astronauts to escape the Earths atmosphere. Was there some possibility that in a remote part of our Solar System there could be some sort of terrestrial life?

It was decided that this enquiry should be put to an expert. And so AJ Ayer was asked 'What might be the significance of the moon landings?'.

His response: 'A colossal bore'.
